Neuss is a municipality and city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is located opposite Düsseldorf on the left bank of the Rhine at the mouth of the Erft. The city has 152,644 inhabitants and is Kreisstadt of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss. The official name of the city of Neuss has been since 1968. Before that, it was spelled Neuß. Old Dutch spellings are Nuys and Nuis.

The city and its name go back to the Roman army camp Castra Novaesium, which was built in the first century BC. Neuss is one of the oldest cities in Germany: in 1984 the city celebrated its 2000 anniversary. Neuss received city rights in 1190.
In 1209 the construction of the late Romanesque basilica Quirinusmunster, the most important monument of the city, was started. The Roman martyr Quirinus is the patron saint of Neuss. In the Middle Ages, On July 26, 1586, the city was completely destroyed during the Cologne War by an attack on the city by the Duke of Parma during the Neuss Bloodbath. A total of about 3,000 civilians were killed, with a population of about 4,500, and the entire garrison consisting of 1,600 soldiers was killed. After the city was set on fire, only eight houses were spared.
